Miami To Release Four Time Pro Bowler After Failed Contract Talks

Dolphins cut ties with All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard

Miami to release four-time Pro Bowler after failed contract talks

Howard had been with the Dolphins since 2016

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- The Miami Dolphins have informed two-time All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard that he will be cut, NFL Networks Mike Garafolo and Peter Schrager reported Sunday.

The Dolphins and Howard agreed to a five-year contract worth $50.6 million in new money in 2019, the most guaranteed cash for a cornerback in NFL history at the time.

Howard, 30, had three interceptions and 15 passes defensed in 10 games last season. He has been named to the Pro Bowl seven times and was a first-team All-Pro in 2018 and 2020.

The Dolphins parted ways with Howard in March, designating him as a post-June 1 cut. The move saved the Dolphins $12.9 million in cap space.

Howard's release leaves the Dolphins with a big hole in their secondary. Byron Jones, who signed a five-year, $82.5 million contract with the Dolphins in 2020, is expected to start at one cornerback spot. The other starting cornerback spot is up for grabs.
